Observing or imaging celestial objects in the sky using the naked eye, high end binoculars, or telescopes is referred as amateur astronomy. Amateur astronomers can also contribute in doing advanced science, such as by monitoring variable stars, cluster of stars, nebulae, sunspots, solar flares or occultations of stars by the Moon or asteroids, or by participating in transient astronomical events, such as transit of planets, galactic novae or supernovae in other galaxies.
Amateur astronomers do not use this passion of theirs as their primary source of income or support or profit. It is more of a hobby than an occupation. Usually, it involves no professional degree related to astrophysics or advanced academic training in the subject; the only requirement is a keen desire and love for the vast sky.
Amateur astronomers typically view the sky at night when most celestial objects and astronomical events are visible. However, daytime observations are also possible, like viewing the Sun and solar eclipses. As a start, one can just look at the sky using nothing more than their unaided eyes or a simple pair of binoculars though more dedicated amateurs often use compact telescopes or telescopes situated in their private or club observatories.
In today’s tech savvy world, in a dark night’s sky, even simple Android or iOS mobile phone cameras can capture images of the deep sky. DSLR cameras with, or without, some modifications, adapters, filters and specific lenses can also be used for imaging. Apart from that, special cameras for astroimaging are also available. Amateurs can join as members of amateur astronomical societies, like ours, which can advise, educate, or guide them towards ways of finding and observing celestial objects.
In addition, amateur astronomers can also promote the passion and splendor of astronomy among the general public.

★★★★★
A very interesting session was conducted by Sir. Not only we were given an opportunity to witness Jupiter with its four satellites in full glory but he also explained the red cloud band. A very memorable experience.
